Dr. Dan Nathanson

February 27, 2024

It is with great sadness to share with you that Academy Fellow Dr. Dan Nathanson, Professor Emeritus passed away in February. Dan practiced with us for 35 years and was a dear and great friend.

It is difficult to effectively summarize the scope, depth, and impact of Dr. Nathanson’s distinguished career spanning over 50 years. His academic journey began with a dental degree from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, followed by postdoctoral studies at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Boston University School of Graduate Dentistry. He published more than 400 works and had the honor to speak in over 45 countries.

Throughout his four-decade tenure at Boston University, he was a transformative figure, both at school and across his field, establishing himself as a renowned educator, clinician, and researcher. His work significantly advancing the fields of prosthodontics, esthetic and restorative dentistry through clinical applications and research.

Dr. Nathanson was awarded the honorary title of Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine Distinguished Scientist, which is conferred to recognize individuals at the highest level of academic and research achievement. Danny is one of only two individuals to have been awarded at this level in the school’s history.

Dr. Nathanson was a Fellow and Past President of the American Academy of Esthetic Dentistry, the International Federation of Esthetic Dentistry, the International Academy of Dental Research and the Society for Color and Appearance. He was a Fellow in the Academy of Prosthodontics and the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and a Member of the American College of Prosthodontists.

He had great passion and in-depth knowledge of opera, classical music, history, and art. He was a recreational pilot and had his own plane. He was always excited to have his friends join him on adventures. Dan was a natural-born storyteller. He was able to capture his audience with authority, elegance, and a little bit of humor coupled with his special wisdom.

He leaves behind his wife, Dr. Sinaia Nathanson, daughters Natalie and Doria and brother Uzi Nattiv.

He was a giant in our practice and treated every patient with respect and kindness as well as providing the highest level of specialty care. His humor and love will always be missed. Our hearts are broken.
