The relationship of dental condition to risk for hip fracture:
A pilot study

Three learning objectives:

  1. To become aware that decayed or filled teeth may possibly provide additional useful information, as a co-morbidity, that could be used to identify those at risk of hip fracture.
  2. Given the significant morbidity and mortality associated with hip fractures, recognition of valuable information to the medical and dental communities who are interested in understanding oral-systemic interactions.
  3. To become aware that those individuals who require osteoporosis-related hip fracture surgery do have different dental conditions, as measured by DMFT status, than individuals who are osteoporotic/osteopenic with a T-score<-1.5 but who have not had a personal history of osteoporotic fracture.

Abstract:

In this study, patients with a recent osteoporosis-related fracture were identified and compared to patients with a T-score ≤ -1.5 without previous fracture.  Osteoporotic status was defined by BMD T-score.  All patients underwent an oral evaluation (DMFT) and risk factors were identified. Demographic factors will be presented as well as the association of DMFT score with case status. The clinical implications of our findings will be shared.
