The influence of prosthodontics procedures on esthetic outcomes in implant dentistry. A systematic review

Learning Objectives:

1. Participants will be able to identify / describe prosthodontic procedures capable of influencing the predictability and achievement of esthetic outcomes in implant dentistry
2. Participants will be familiarized with existing evidence relating to the use of specified prosthodontic options for implant assisted esthetic restorations
3.  Participants will be provided with clinical recommendations intended to reduce the likelihood of negative outcomes for restorations in the esthetic zone

Abstract

Implant therapy has evolved to routinely include rehabilitation of patients missing teeth of esthetic significance. Identification, however, of criteria and procedures that may be utilized to evaluate treatment success remain inconsistent, both in what is reported and if it is reported at all. This presentation will concentrate on the findings of a systematic review of existing literature focused on implant assisted prosthodontic treatment options. The review was undertaken to identify prosthodontic factors that influence the esthetic outcome of implant-based therapy, and the quality of the evidence associated with them. The procedures included the presence or absence of templates to optimize the positioning of implants, the morphology of the implant, the utilization of a provisional restoration, the design and material choice for the abutment and definitive restoration, and lastly the cement or screw retention of the definitive prosthesis. Factors including papilla height, tissue form and color, and PES/WES were utilized to search for esthetic outcomes.
